Each week for Arcade Gems we highlight lesser-known, must-play titles. These games are favorites of those in-the-know, and, once you give them a try, we think you’ll agree that they’re worthy classics.

This week’s Arcade Gem is definitely not lesser-known but is certainly in the must-play category: Apocalypse II (1995)

Apocalypse II is a scrolling shooter in the vein of Asteroids. The player pilots a spaceship that can shoot lasers at moons. Each moon you hit earns you points and destroying different sizes gives you extra points. Stages begin with possible power-ups including speed boosts, rotation, missiles, shields, and 1UP extra ship.
